WHAT OUR ANIMALS EAT:

The grazing animals (sheep and cows) are on pasture as long as possible and supplemented with hay in the winter.  They do receive a small amount of grain as needed, but it is not a large part of their diet.

The hogs are out on pasture as well and root around to find tasty treats in the soil.  They are fed grain in addition.  They also get veggie scraps on occasion from the organic veggie farm down the road.

The poultry are all out on pasture as age appropriate.  They find bugs, worms, and seeds to snack on, but are fed grain as their main food source.

All feed is organic.

POULTRY

Picture
CHICKEN
We raise “Freedom Ranger” chickens outside on pasture.  We prefer this breed because they can walk for their entire lives.  Many meat breeds will become so heavy in the breast they cannot lift their bodies off the ground.  This breed grows a little slower and has meatier legs than a more traditional meat breed.  These chickens have the run of the pasture and so are able so supplement their diet with tasty bugs and worms.

All birds are farm raised, slaughtered, and packaged.

Charlie, our oldest son, has started an egg business: Charlie's Chicken Farm.  He sells eggs for $4.00 a dozen and they come from our laying hens who roam free around the barn yard eating any delicious worms or bugs they may find.  We have a variety of hens whose eggs vary in color. Each dozen is different!

Soap

Pork fat is one of the many wonderful things that comes back to us from the butcher.  We take all that lovely fat and render it into lard, a very under appreciated fat source.  Some gets used in our day to day cooking (tortillas, pie crust, doughnuts), but most we use to make wonderful lard based soaps.  Just generations ago lard based soaps were widely made and used.  It was valued for its cleaning power and for how well it lasts.  We have experimented with a variety of soap recipes, but the 100% lard base has been our best product.  We offer it in a variety of scents.  You can email to see what we currently have available or you can visit our Etsy shop where you will also find liquid soap and felted soap. http://www.etsy.com/shop/LardAndLavender?ref=ss_profile
